Aquariums - as good for our well being and state of mind as they are for the millions of creatures that inhabit it's seemingly small, and at the same time, unendingly vast and bountiful landscape. To us giants, we see the glass box with rocks, and coral, and it's torrents of water swishing about; however, those who live within the contents know it's lush fields of green and red plant life - rolling rocky hills and cliff faces perched above an undersea beach. To each and every inhabitant, the...

Proper Dosing of Medicated Foods Jay Hemdal c. 2020 Oral medications are an excellent way to target internal diseases of fishes. Marine fish absorb aquarium water, so in certain cases, they “drink” enough medication from the water to effect a cure. However, freshwater fish actively export water from their tissues and do not take in aquarium water, so injectable or oral medications are really the only internal delivery system that works for them. Years ago, there were a variety of...

Welcome to R2R! If you are new to forums in general, or just new to this site and its specific platform, then you may need help with navigating and knowing where and how to post. Flashlight Fish in Captivity Jay Hemdal C. 2020 Introduction Flashlight fish, with their eerie green glowing photophores (light emitting organs), are arguably one of the most unique fish available to marine aquarists. One of only two families of fish kept in aquariums that are bioluminescent (the other being the pinecone fish), flashlight fish hold a strong fascination for many people, myself included. I worked with them over 30 years ago at the John G. Shedd Aquarium, and we have...

Teaching tangs to eat nori is relatively simple. If one fish in a tank know how to eat nori, the rest of the herbivores will learn in short order. However, if this is a new tank, and none of the tangs have seen nori before, they need to learn how to see nori as food. I normally put the nori clip in the tank. As the nori stay in the water for a day or two, it will start to come apart and low in the water. Eventually the tang will take a bite and find out that this is food and goes after the...

Anemones and other photosynthetic corals obtain their complement of Zooxanthellae from the water column in the wild. In many case , with stress Anemones can completely loose all of their Zooxanthellae. In case like this, we can jump-start the process by feeding them with live viable Zooxanthellae from another animal of the same species if at all possible. I have done multiple procedure like this in my 40 years of keeping reef aquarium. I like to document this here. This tread should...

Hi all. I've been a long time lurker getting lots of useful info off the forum to set up my first tank. I got some personal help last week with a fish diagnosis so I was looking for some way to give back to the community. I am color blind which makes reading most test kits impossible. I have been using all Red Sea test kits. I can see the color change on the Alkalinity if I do 0.5 dkH increments but that is it. The rest I have are pink to blue color changes and I just can't see the red. To...

Product Review: AquaMaxx Puratek Reverse Osmosis/Deionization Filtration Unit By Dana Riddle Water evaporates, salts do not – this is one of the first things a marine hobbyist learns. Hence fresh water must be added to keep the aquarium water from becoming too salty. If you’re fortunate, tap water in your area might be suitable for topping off the water level. In many cases, this is not the case and some sort of pretreatment is required. If you’re unsure of your local water quality, an...
