looking to make a stand for a 120g aga rr tank. 48 x 24 x24 I want to make the stand a little bigger like 54 L x 30 d x 36H and my ?'s is do I make the stand to dims I want and then put plywood on top. any input would be great!!! Thanks, Peter

I would put all of your supports under where the tank will actually sit. I wouldn't trust it to support the weight of that tank otherwise. You would end up with a frame within your stand. What were you planning on using for material?

I was planning to use 2x6's and 2x4's and then skin it w/ some oak or maple.

I just finished building this stand for a friend. This is for a 90g but maybe this will give you some ideas. This is built with just 3/4 birch plywood with rabbits and dados and a poplar face frame and doors. However the top is actually laminated to 1 3/4 thick. Very solid but for a 120 you may want to actually use 2x material for a frame and skin it. If you have any questions just ask.

Thats a nice stand and I like the way you constructed it. If you take into consideration how manufacters make their stands I think your construction will support the weight of a 120. However If you don't have all the proper tools and knowhow (which was my case) I think the 2x4 construction and skining it is easier and is why I went that way.
