I have this acan that has grown faster than I expected. It's now growing on all sides and even on the underside of it's plug. I'd like to frag it in half and put those halves on larger grow out plates. What are some guidlines to follow so I don't kill or mess this guy up?

If it's on a plug, easy. Just tease it a little to get the polyps to contract some and then cut through the skeleton (avoiding heads as much as possible) using either a band saw, dremel, or other clean-cutting tool of your choice.

I've heard of people using a steak knife. Ever do it that way?

I haven't, but I guess if the serration was fine enough to make a clean cut....

Really, though, you can get a hack saw from Wal-Mart for like ten bucks or probably a Dremel knock off from Harbor Freight for the same.

The goal is just to minimize destruction and make a clean separation.

I'll just wait and get a dremel. Thanks guys

I'd be interested to know if anyone has used one of those oscillating multi-tools to frag. I keep looking to pick one up. Then I saw one on sale right now at Harbor Freight that I've heard is pretty reliable - except for the cheap attachments that can be replaced with ones from nicer tools. Figure I might pick it up for the <$30 and use it until (if) it burns out before replacing with a name brand. Would be curious if it would be clean enough for fragging though, or if the back and forth oscillations would cause harm.
