I am contemplating purchasing an Achilles Tang for my 180-gl SPS tank and was wondering if it is a good idea or not?

I already have all my tangs in place that I want, so this would be the last tang for my tank. I was also told to be the least aggressive in first and the most aggressive in last for obvious reasons; which makes sense.

I am curious to know how aggressive they are, how difficult they are to acclimate to your tank and how to treat them once ou put into the existing tank?

Any direction and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.......

What other tangs/fish do you have in there and sizes would help. Your MP60s will help create the strong water flow they seem to like.

I have (1) medium to large Kole tang and (1) medium to large traditional Yellow tang. As stated, I do not plan on getting and Hippo, Power Blue or Naso type tangs in the future. If I get this Achilles, it will be the last tang in my tank. I want to focus on wrasses and anthias going forward.

Thanks for your input........

You would be fine with those tangs. Honestly I haven't noticed the Achilles to be over aggressive at all.

PLEASE find one that has been in captivity for a while and is eating well. If you do that you have a good chance of keeping one long term.

The only other issue I see that might be an issue is the 60" tank. Not real sure about that though.

All fish have different temperaments, but I added the achilles last to my tank and have had no issues.
Other tangs and how long they have been in the tank:
Yellow Tang: 10 years
Blue Regal: 6 years
Sailfin: 5 years
Naso: 5 years
Achilles: 1.5 years

All get along with no issues.

Ya looks like you could add one and be fine. As statedabove get one that is eating well will help your chances. I have been lookingin to this fish a lot as it is my favorite and I plan on adding one to my tankonce it is ready for it. Good luck with adding this great fish.

This is definitely one of the toughest tangs to acclimate to our tanks. My friend has tried it 4-5 times and hasn't succeeded yet. I'm not sure what's going on but back in the early 80s, these seem to be so easy to care for. It was a lot cheaper back then too, like $35. Like Rev mentioned, you will be far better off if you can find one that has been doing well in captivity.

I have to tend to agree with all above posts. I did in fact purchase on from an online vendor and it arrived DOA, but is was the fault of UPS....it showed up a day late due to "mechanical problems with the plane".

I think I have given up on Power Blue tangs, Naso tangs and Achilles for awhile. I have has Nazo's in the past and they do very well for months and then all of a sudden they die for no apparent reason. Power Blue's I have found very difficult to keep too. In my experience, they swin around my 180-gl tank very scared and continually circle back and forth and drives my nuts seeing them swim so scared. It breaks my heart, and my pocketbook, to see fish die, so I am going to stick to basics with fish selection going forward. Maybe these three tangs simply need much larger tangs to be happy?

To that end, my focus has been wrasses lately and love seeing them in my tank too.

Many thanks for all the valued input..............
