So I just added the sand and the water is cloudy as expected, should I leave the powerhead on to keep the water flowing or should I shut it off and let everything settle down?

I saw a video on YouTube of a guy using a big fat PVC pipe to drop sand down into specific areas. It seemed to take a little extra time but he avoided sandstorms.

So I literally just added 40 pounds of live sand to my new tank last week. What did tge best foe me was filtering all of the water through mechanical filtration, sponges, etc... It ultimately took about 10 days before it all finally cleared. Put a HOB with some filter floss and change it out twice a day and you should be golden

Here is the easiest no mess way to add live sand to an aquarium, I've done it many times without a problem. Wether your tank is full or empty. If your tank is empty, lay the unopened live sand bags on the bottom of the aquarium, cut away the plastic bags, gently spread the sand where you want it. Lay a plastic tray on top of the sand, and pour the water into the tray, you'll just have a little residue and that's all, i did this for my latest build(125gl reef tank) my tank was clear in less than an hour. If you have water in the tank, take the bag of live sand and gently lower it to the bottom of the tank. Slowly cut away the plastic and remove it, gently and slowly spread the sand where you want it. Little mess, no fuzz, no whiteout conditions

Next time just pre rinse the sand in tap water until it runs clean before installing/problem solved.

I know that doesn't help now, but a reader right now might be upcoming with the job it will save mass clouding headaches to pre rinse

Even if it's live sand rinse, the bacteria are not killed in brief rinsing actions. When you install that way, however you add the grains they fall like snow globe flakes. The silt we preserve by not rinsing isn't helpful, people don't rinse because they think it deactivates the sand, it won't.

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I should've asked before putting it in. Otherwise I would have put the sand in slowly
