I have a 30 gal DIY sump and and considering adding a refugium to my cheato section. The area is the chamber all the way to the right.

My cheato kinda fills the space at the moment. So just kinda looking for suggestions on what to make that space. I'd like to have it be a good copepods habitat and whatever else.

What is the chances of putting say..... A 2-3 inch sand bed on bother the left and right sides of my sump? At the moment there is no skimmer in sump so, omit that part of photo :)

Basically display water comes in on left.... Into center section.... Then return pump sends water to tank and part is diverted to "refugium", the refugium then dumps into return section again.

I feel just sand or whatever on right side just isn't enough....

Any reason I can't have 2 "refugiums" in my sump? Maybe one side live rock rubble... Other side sand or mud with macro?

Instead of sand, you might think about adding reborn calcium reactor media. Pods like places to hide and will colonize the bed. If you do use sand think about adding some rock rubble.
