Any update on this? I'm dealing with the exact same thing right now. Got the guard off and in a shaded area in the tank, but my nem still hasn't let go yet.

Just an update on my BTA that got stuck in the guard for the ph. I took the guard off and placed it on the bottom of the tank. In the morning, I checked and the BTA had freed himself from the holes and was just sitting on the guard. I gently coaxed him off the plastic and placed him back on a rock. Hes been thriving ever since.
