Hello all! Happy Thursday, or as my friend calls it "Friday, Jr."! I guess I would categorize this process of evaluation as Quarantine/Shelter In Place/work from home BOREDOM!
Wondering if anyone out there has any experience switching to Reef Pro's new line of elements?
I'm debating switching to something other than Red Sea Foundation, not because I hate it, it's stable, but nothing about it knocks my socks off either.
So, thought I would do a little research on Reef Pro. In an effort to compare the two on dosing volume and price, I did some rough math and came up with the following:
(Calcium) 1mL of Reef Pro Part A vs. Red Sea Foundations:
If I am using 30mL of Red Sea A, I would need 125mL of Reef Pro A? Red Sea's Part A raises Calcium by 2ppm per 100 liters (25 gallons), so the per gallon ratio I came up with is +50ppm, while Reef Pro is +12ppm per gallon.
(Alkalinity) 1mL ofReef Pro Part B vs. Red Sea Foundations B:
If I am using 75mL of Red Sea B, I would use roughly 112mL of Reef Pro B? Reef Pro raises per gallon by 1.7dKH (+0.6 meq/l), while Red Sea is +0.1 dKH (+0.036 meq/l) in 100 liters (25 gallons). Per gallon ratio is +2.5 dKH (0.9 meq/l).
From an economical standpoint, it seems that I would save nearly $200 per year on Part B (a cool frag worth!), on a per mL cost basis, Red Sea = $0.017 or, $1.27 per day. Reef Pro would run $0.0065 per mL, or $.073 per day at my current dosage rate -- impressive!
Red Sea A and Reef Pro Part A, have identical per mL costs. However, the daily cost of Red Sea A = $0.48 while Reef Pro would run $0.77 per day. This would end up costing me $125 annually more than Red Sea. Assuming my clacs are correct and that Red Sea is really 4x the concentration of Reef Pro.
At current usage, I guess I am still saving some $, but not sure if saving $75 is worth learning and dialing in a new elements program. Or, I could just switch to Reef Pro Part B and take the $200 saved to the next live sale
Interested to hear of people's experience with Reef Pro-- especially anyone who switched from Red Sea Foundations.
thanks!!
Mike
