Apex Temp calibration

So i ordered an ultra accurate calibration thermometer finally and found one of my temp probes was reading 1.6 degrees too high and another was reading 0.6 degrees too high.

This wasnt a big deal since i run my tank from 79 to 80 anyway i was still in safe zone.

The guys running tanks at 76, there are a lot of you, youd have been at 74.4 or lower depending on how much variance you allow.

That’s precisely why I would always suggest calibrating your probe no matter what temp control device you are using.

I calibrate my probes every quarter.

not sure with the apex, but
generally two other temperature measuring devices, I use 2 digital temperature with remote probe devices and adjust my temp controller as needed.

This is what I use:

It’s highly accurate, so the process is quick and easy.

If you don’t want to spend so much on a thermometer, get a couple digital thermometers and average the temps.

That's what i use also.

Plus i have a glass one and run dual probes on my apex along with a JBJ true temp.

+1 on the Tracer Thermometer. I use it also for all my tanks! Easy to do and then calibrate it.

Can you calibrate the Neptune temp probe though? I think mine is off. I have two Ebo Jagger heaters. Both set as low as 76 will turn on when my Apex is reading 79 ish. When NOT controlled by Apex.

If you are using Fusion:

Click this:

To expand the menu (unless not needed) to be able to click this:

Scroll down throughout all of your inputs until you find your temperature probe, probably looking like:

Click that, and then you can calibrate it by clicking:

Follow all of the prompts.

That is how you calibrate the Apex temp probe... however, I’m sure you’re aware that the Jager thermometers my well be off as well as/instead of the Apex temp probe. One you calibrate the Apex probe, calibrate the Jagers today match, or just raise their temps until they don’t turn on before they are supposed to.

I am following along just bought an apex classic for my 75 so I will have to figure things out will be following this for the helpful info thanks. I also have a Jbj true temp. Should I run that as well along with the apex? This is my first big tank

So hannah instruments has a new thermometer that is 40$ and is accurate + or - 0.5. The same as the long one that is 65$, but the only thing is the Hannah one dosent come with a certificate of accuracy i dont believe

The Apex doesn’t have a heater, just a temp probe as a way of controlling a heater or heaters. Use your True Temp and set it’s controller a degree or so higher than the Apex, so the Apex is the one turning it on and off so long as the Apex is working. If it’s probe fails, the JBJ True Temp’s controller will take over.

Right on thank u for the info. So I’ll have to get an additional heater for the apex system. And leave the 300 watt heater connected to the Jbj system for a back up. Also I have been looking up different ways to mount my apex system and bought a cabinet to go on the side of the stand so the system
Will be out of the sump area. Does anyone have any pics of there setup that’s in the same aspect?

Is it possible to use ice to calibrate temp probe without causing damage?

I use an infrared thermometer. Comes in handy for alot of things. Checking your central heat/air ducts, quick check on aquarium without getting saltwater on anything, fridge temp, oven temp and my favorite is checking the temp in my big green egg.

FYI I have this and looked into using it but the temperature differential is +/- 3.4 degrees. Too much in my opinion to calibrate the APEX probe

How do you know its off? What are you comparing it to? Both of my finnex heater controllers are set at 79 and my temp gun is reading 78.9. Close enough for me.
