I read a couple of articles recently regarding the importance of flow for corals. Some say that it is even more important than lighting as respiration, waste removal and oxygen exchange are more important.

With that being said I decided to upgrade the flow in my Nuvo 20 from just a Tunze 6040 and add an IceCap 1k gyre as well.

Within 24 hours I notice better polyp extension in many of my corals and my Acans seem to be slightly more inflated.

I’m anxious to see how this works out for my tank in the long run.

What have you other reefers experienced regarding flow?

After watching a video of Jason Fox talking about his tanks saying if your sands not moving your flow is to low I tried it out. My tank has crushed coral for substrate so I turned all my powerheads and my xf280 gyre to max. I then started tuning everything down till I saw a gentle wiggle of my crushed coral. It took a few days for my LPS to adjust but my softies looked happier right away. Within a week my SPS frags started to grow twice as much as the last month. I have now have close to 60x turnover in my tank.

I’ve set my Gyre 1k from 10-50% on random mode to see how it does. I noticed that as it collided with the flow from my Tunze that it causes quite a bit of turbulence as well.

So far things are looking good. I’m excited to see what this does regarding growth.
