I have this mushroom that has followed me for 3 aquariums. It was weak and always tended to let go, get blown around and hide in dark places. It was originally green. I stumbled upon it a couple of months ago and threw in a tank I set up end of last year. It lost all of its green and turned brown. I wonder how this thing has survived for so long. An acro would’ve given up day 1. Any thoughts appreciated. I guess this is a green discosoma

IMHO most soft corals are at the very least hardy survivors and willing to survive even in low light. That's why most of my tank is filled with zoas and RFAs (just as hardy).

RFA... drooling. Hard to find where I live. On the list. For the mushroom, yeah, can’t kill it. I honestly keep it because it’s always popping up. I admire its longevity.

I think you know I have a lot of RFAs (50+ now). And I just bought one I'm crazy about. The oral disk is purple/magenta and unfortunately doesn't fluoresce, but it's beautiful and very unusual. The tentacle are mostly gold with tiny flecks of green and look very metallic when they fluoresce under blue leds. I wish I could get a photo that does it justice. It's new to the tank and in a big pvc end cap, so it's mostly curled up in the bottom. Starting today I'll add some sand to the cap and encourage the RFA to stretch up and rise up above the sand and rim of the end cap so it can show off it's colors!

Zooxanthella are brown: So it's highly unlikely this shroom is azooxanthella

There are many corals that can survive in extremely low light conditions. Remember, even the household lights can put off enough light to grow plants/algea. If you have a window anywhere near by, more so. I've had Zoe rocks get turned upside down and missed placed for MONTHS, find them, turn them up right and the Zoes are little bumps with no tentacles and no color. Leave in the light and they are back in a week or two.
