Is there any specific way I should go about adding a small bit of sand to my tank for a wrasse?

I was thinking a small container of some sort that is deep enough for one to bury itself at full size.

You can do the container, but sand dwelling wrasses will attempt to dive into the sand when startled, and may be more prone to injuring themselves whilst trying to escape. I would recommend going with cocoon making wrasses (fairy wrasses, etc) if you are going bare bottom.

Yes, you can use a container with a couple inches of sand, and essentially make a sandbox.

Not all genera require sand though. Only these genera require sand; other genera sleep in a mucus cocoon in the rockwork or crevices: Anampses, Halichoeres, Macropharyngodon, and Pseudojuloides.

Halichoeres Melanarus is what provoked my interest, any advice on where to place the sandbox?

Anywhere that works for you. The melanurus will find it. Though many prefer to keep them tucked behind the rockwork.

was thinking about going barebottom and i have 6line, would it need sand?

The Pseudocheilinus genus sleeps in a mucus cocoon; no sand needed.
