BB or black sand

I had the same dilemma few months ago and decided to go with black sand. After two months of trying to keep it clean ( impossible) I gave out and went BB. I love it.

Do not get the black sand! It will get stuck in your mag float and scratch your glass. I had it and got rid of it shortly after. Some people say it's magnetic also but i just think because of its shape it clings to things easily.

I like the look of black sand but my buddy said it was hard to keep clean plus it had a magnetic issue as well.

On the other hand Mike&Terry here from R2R said their sand was not magnetic.

It's not scratching the bottom that's the problem. It will gouge your front glass like crazy.

I put black sand in a nano and it looked awesome...for a day. I can't seem to keep it or the glass clean. It also seems magnetic because it loves to cling to my mag float which in turn will scratch the glass. The black sand it too high maintenance foe me, so I am going to remove it and go bare bottom.

You want something totally different?

Its whatever color you paint the bottom - totally inert and you can see whats in it and won't scratch the glass (or shouldn't)
I just ordered fifty pounds.

I would be interested in a link as well.

Not trying to offend anyone who goes bare bottom as I'm sure they have their benefits but they just do not look natural. I could be wrong but I don't think I would ever go bare bottom

Hey m&m did u put anything down on the bottom so u didn't scratch the bottom? I've heard of using thin acrylic.

No I put my rocks directly on the bottom glass. Some people use starboard or sheet of acrylic, being afraid rocks my slide and brake the glass. Mine rocks are secured with acrylic rods and cement.

Hey can you start a new thread about these? This is interesting!

Another options is too use an epoxy sand bed. Get the look of sand with the efficiency of BB.

looks kinda like glass shot or the beads they use in the paint on the highway to make the stripes reflect light.

The bottom of my system is covered with so much Coraline Algae that you cant see what color it ever was. (Its clear but you would never know it)
