...been struggling

Oh, I did figure out what happened... sort of.

I had a little chemical packet leftover from the day I put water in my tank. It was probably like, 50ml of liquid. I don’t remember the name of it because it just sat in the back of my cabinet for 9 months... it is missing... gone.

You should consider running a polyfilter as well, the reason being is that an ICP test will not show you any kind of organic contamination. It will only show you the elements that they test for. Heavy metals etc. while those are a possibility, there’s a whole world of organic contaminants that could very well be responsible for your fish deaths. Sorry to hear about your tang.

How are your corals looking?
How often should I change out the poly filter?

That‘s a good question. I think it depends, once it gets nasty I’d toss it. Maybe someone here has a more scientific answer. I must confess it’s probably been 20+ years since I’ve used one.

So, I am still in coasting along mode. My tank will be 1 year old on Jan 18th. I’ll start putting fish back in then. I still can’t skim : ( ....I need to be able to skim!
