What's the best filter socks to use? Mesh, Polyester 100, 150, 200 micro fibers? 4" or 7".

I can fit a 7" but a 4" would fit nicer?

It depends on your system and what your schedule allows.

First off mesh and polyester. Mesh is just like a net that won't really clog up (also doesn't stop as much). I think a lot of people run the polyester socks. They usually need to be changed out every 2-5 days. They can be machine washed and reused for years!

Next is the filter size. 100 micron filter sock will clog faster than a 400 because it stops much smaller particles.

As for the 4 and 7" I don't see an advantage to run one or another. I would imagine on larger systems the 7 would be needed because it has more surface area and could handle more water flow through it.

I would think a safe bet would to be the polyester 200 micron 4"

Great that's what I'm running. It clogs ever week perfect when I'm doing my water change. I was told that 100 gets clogged faster than 200.

Yes you are right (I had to look it up:)). I explained this to someone a week ago and did the same thing then too :D. I edited the post to correct it.

my suggestion is buy 3 of them and just rotate them out. i swap mine out once a week, once two are dirty i throw them in the washing machine with no detergent under hot cycle and air dry.

I would have to buy a separate washing machine just for the socks as my wife would have a heart attack if she ever caught new putting then in. her machine lol

I don't think bleach is needed. It may not hurt anything but may not be needed.

We keep about 20 felt socks on hand and rotate them out every 4 to 5 days. When I take them out, I flip them inside out and dip in saltwater to rescue any pods that may have found their way into the socks (food for the wrasses).

To clean, I take them outside and hose them off inside and out which removes nearly all of the detritus. I then run them thru the wash with 1/4 cup of bleach. I rinse them in a 5g bucket with RO/DI water with a dechlorinator tab and then one more quick rinse in plain RO/DI water. Sounds like a lot of work, but I clean several at a time and it really doesn't take that long.

BRS has some really good ones, group buy going on right now that will start tuesday, pm me your email address and last name and I'll add you to the list! Only need a couple more people!!

I get mine from BFS and am very pleased. It's the way to go. I have about 15 socks I keep in rotation and do a bulk cleaning. Much easier to to it that way.

i spray mine out with a water hose. that gets most everything out. then i soak in bleach and water for maybe 30 minutes or longer sometimes if im busy. then i rinse the heck out of them and let them air dry. if you cant smell bleach it is fine. i have been doing this for a while now with no problems.

I wash mine in the washing machine with vinegar than rinse in RO/DI water before using

Turn mine inside out and wash them in a slop sink . Then put them in a 5 gallon bucket with bleach for a week . Take them out , since off in the sink and let dry.

How are you turning them inside out when they have that big plastic brace in the middle of the hole?
