Has anyone removed the sponge filter on the bottom that is in between middle chamber and return pump chamber on a Biocube I’m asking because I feel like this is a potential nitrate factory. Also has anyone did any filter mods either diy or modded stock ones or the intank media towers

No I keep it there and take it out monthly in the water I’m discarding. I could do it with my weekly if it seemed to get dirty faster. Go to YouTube and check out: Coralife BioCube Basics: simple filter modifications. I based my modifications on this and it’s working great. Good luck.

Thanks I’ll check it out !

I meant to say I take the sponge out once a month and rinse it out in the water I’m discarding from the water change, sorry I went to public school.

The InTank media tower is a great mod. I have it in mine and really like it. The flow is good and there are 3 decent sized chambers.

It’s ok I was just thinking of removing it to maybe help with my nutrients and it may potentially slow down flow

Mines missing the water flow director and i broke the rolled edge lip of it other day after I thought chamber 1 was a better spot for it which it wasn’t after I almost didn’t get it back out lol

Exactly why it should be removed. Been many years since I owned a biocube, but that was one of the first things I did before even getting it wet.

It's there to keep debris out of the pump, but unless it's cleaned like once a week, it decreases flow between the chambers, and can potentially become a detritus trap, which in turn makes it a nitrate factory.

Yeah it’s all junked up in a weeks time and I forget it’s there half the time ‍♂️ I’m planning to suck out the rear chambers completely today and try and remove all the built up junk which in terms be a small water change

Used to do my WC's that way too. If you suck them all out(including any crap left in there), it's like a 5G WC.

Which IMO is right about perfect for a biocube.

That’s nice to know I have 3g left over from water changes so I was just gonna suck out 3g and hope I can get all the gunk out with the 3g of water

You could also consider cutting some mesh to replace the sponge since that would be lower maintenance while still keeping stuff out of the return pump.

By the way, would anyone mind measuring how wide the sump is on your cube? I'm guessing about 3 1/2" but the only measurements I can find online are of the whole unit. That'd be much appreciated!

I will try to grab a measurement today!
