What do you think of this one?

Threw it on ebay and see how much a polyp will fetch.

yea that what this hobby needs. another sub average over priced coral
look nice but rather common. the thing that makes the hornet cool is the alternating skirt colors. if it was not for that people would not really care about it. also if you ever see one in person you wont be very impressed. it is nice but in person the colors dont stand out like they do in a picture. a whole colony of neon orange zoas looks nicer then a hornet colony does

I agree on the fact that the above coral really doesn't fit the Hornet name. It might look better with a better picture there are hints of more color if you look close. I have a frag of AquaSD Purple Hornets and they look better in person than my picture can show. I can't wait to have a large colony.

So to qualify for "hornet" naming, it needs alternating tentacles? I figured it had to do with a circle around the mouth...like the rings on a hornet?

Honestly, I have seen other zoas with alternating colors on the tentacles, but did not have the circle. It's not that uncommon. BTW- It appears on the zoas pictured above that every other tentacle has a blue tip.

And, I completely agree that purple hornets are not that spectacular in person as they are in a macro photo.

Don't flush it yet Jim!!! Some of us like it.

Just get rid of the "hornet" name since it seems to be such a touchy word!

I like some of the other names that were being thrown around!

Tell us how you really feel LOL!

Maybe I should just flush it now before it takes over my tank.

haha thats not what i meant. it is a very nice polyp and in no way is guly. you have to take the whole quote. i was directing that to the person wanting it to go on ebay. the "fetch the highest dollar for every polyp" thing drives me crazy

I agree with EliteReefs about the Purple Hornets not looking that nice in person. Because of the price tag they command, I ended up grabbing a few polyps from a friend who had them. But in all honesty, I like some of the other zoas that are cheaper in price compared to the Purple Hornets. What I disagree about is if someone is willing to pay big bucks for some corals, why not let the person who has it make some profit of those willing to pay. Slap an LE, or Tyree on it and you got yourself some high price zoas :). Heck this might even be a trend, or is it already happening that I don't know about?

I know...I was just bustin' your chops. I'm feeling a little punchy today! :)

I have a purple hornet polyp that I got from a friend, but most people just overlook it cause the individual polyps are so small the details get lost, unlike a macro photo where you can appreicate the color. Personally, I LOVE the very large polyps, like Grandis, Purple Death or Nuc Greens. I am hoping this very small polyp grows larger. If anyone has had purple hornets for any length of time, can you tell me their growth rate...thanks

I never have bought a coral because of the name....or really even bought it because of the price it can fetch (unless maybe it was so cheap I knew I couldn't lose on it). That doesn't mean I haven't owned pieces with Tyree and LE in their name, but in my small glass box, it has to be worthy to take up space.

Nice polyp but does not have relation to the hornet. The Purple Hornet was named because of the yellow on an actual hornet.

Hey, that's amazing...I actually snapped a picture of one of the very few zoanthid colonies I have which survive in my tank, and today I have to say I think we should call them Brown Mud-dobbers....

Aren't these pretty much the same? (sorry about the filthy glass...I never seem to take pics when it's clean!!)

So where does the purple come into play? You got purple on your hornets?

I used a shop vac to suck up an entire nest of hornets...but none of them had purple:

You guys are pretty defensive about this hornet name. Wow. This is no different than name everything with a green linear mouth a "people eater".

Mitch those look like the same ones. Mud-dobber as a name isn't doing it for me though...

Brown Hornet? wasn't that a super hero of Fat Albert?

pick a better name LOL

I wasn't up on my Fat Albert trivia...but now I'm liking the name even more.

A quick google search confirms, there is indeed a brown hornet:

I got the polyp I have in a trade, otherwise I wouldn't pay the going price. Like I said, it's nice close up, but nothing special with the naked eye...
