Hi

Sorry about the long post, and big question at the end. Please help.

Have quite a challenging question and wondering your perspectives. I started a new tank 50 gallon as a beginner back in May 2019, and got a ocellaris clownfish. It was the only fish, and ever since then it grew very nicely. The clownfish is about twice bigger now, and fairly healthy size. Our family loved this fish since it's very active in the tank. Ever since then, we got 4 other fishes, a yellow tail demselfish, a firefish, a blue damselfish, a black and white damselfish. We got them at different time so we have been adding fish only after at least 2-4 weeks of each fish. I have been checking water parameters every 2-3 days , worst case weekly, and they have been quite good. However, through the journey, we have been sad that we lose the two small damselfish. They were much smaller size compared with "the Nemo". We lose them at different time since we got them at different time.

We have been seeing "the Nemo" to push other fishes , ran fast into other fishes pretty aggressively, and didn't pay attention.

At a point, we thought about stopping the tank. We checked water parameters, and even asked a reputable store to check for us. They have been all fine.

Yesterday, my wife and I spent much more time watching the tank. We witness a big fight between the Nemo and the firefish. They actually bite each other's mouth a couple times, and that seemed quite hard action. It was intense.

I then read quite some posts that a bullying fish would be always a bullying fish no matter what I do ( put a mirror, change the setting - quite hard for a 50 gallon tank ) .

I have been feeding the tank once a time only, and small with frozen mysis shrimp. I have decided to feed them more ( twice a day with flakes ). And the Nemo is such a big eater that it would seem so full ( can see the big belly ). And I still don't want to over feed.

My question is , should I send Nemo back to the store, and start with another Nemo. Hoping that it won't be bullying type. Or should I try to introduce another fish, give more food and see if nemo stops bullying.

I have a quarantine tank and the family is thinking to keep Nemo there forever, and we would make it a permanent tank. But that's not what I would like to see either. What would you recommend?

Instead of selling him or moving him permanently, let's try to make him get along. What I would do is capture him and put him in a breeder box or egg crate box. That way he can see the fish but not attack them. Let him stay in timeout for a while until the new fish settle in. Then move the rock work around. That way the territory the clown established is gone. Hopefully this helps.

Good luck and happy Reefing

Thanks! Will try this. The firefish has been in the tank for about 3 weeks now, so it has been a while.

How long should I keep it in the timeout?

The challenge of the rock work is that my rock work is a bit hard to move as their size and a relatively small tank , plus how I "glue" them together.

This is a good idea and has worked for me in the past. Try this!
