Ive had the same Percula Clownfish for years, probably 12-14, who knows at this point. It USED to be the male in a paired set, but at least 5 years ago his mate choked on a piece of shrimp and died. Since then he has literally watched all of his tankmates age out and has been alone in the tank for at least a couple years. This weekend I went to Capital Aquariums up in Manassas VA and got him (I am assuming now HER) a mate. The single clown they had was pretty young, less than half the size of my current fish, so I was hopeful.
After 15 minutes or so of acclimation I made the introduction. There was one brief flash of aggression by the older fish, then some avoidance, but in literally 10 minutes they became cozy and started what by all accounts appeared to be courting. The weird thing to me is that the new fish was the one pressing the issue. He just kept on the larger ones tail, and any time she would turn to him he would stop, turn sideways and do the cutest little wag with his fins. I guess she thought it was cute as well.
So in case you were wondering if the old tactic of matching clowns by size and age difference works, well it did for me!
