Are circulation pumps really needed for calcium reactors? If so why?

Do many people run them without, what would be so bad about this?

I would just use a kamoer to pull water through.

You need a recirculation pump to properly diffuse the Co2 into tiny bubbles so that it will saturate your water, disperse throughout the reactor chamber continuously, and effectively dissolve your media. There is not nearly enough flow to do the job otherwise.

Try to find a Calcium reactor that has the Eheim or pan world pumps. They last longer and will save you money on impellers and down time.
