Nice catch!! Where did your rocks come from? I just assumed you had Florida rock, and likely got the common Florida N. wennerae mantis, but those do not look like N, wennerae to me from those pics.

I got them from KP Aquatics.
I got mine from Tampa Bay Saltwater, and from I've read most people get the N. wennerae on that rock. I don't know if KP is using a different local for their rock that may have some different critters in that area. The member I tagged before will get you straightened out, if someone else doesn't come along sooner.

I found 2 in my KP order 1 of which is still in the display and hasn't bothered anything of value yet " knock on wood ". I'm thinking he's more than happy feasting on hermits and snails.

Any chance you could get a clear pic of the meral spots (the inside of the arms just above the spear/smasher), and of the antennal scale (the big, feather-looking things on the head)?I managed to catch the first of 2 mantis shrimps. Can anyone ID this?
A straight-on pic of the mantis from directly in front of it is usually a good angle to get both in one pic.

N. Oerstedii.
They're faint in the picture, but purple/pink meral spots are the give away.
The only hitchhikers you're going to see from KP, TPA, etc are N. wennerae, N. Oerstedii, or N. curacaoensis. Most others either lives in the sand or structures burrows under rock as opposed to in rock.
N. bredini is southern carribean which to my knowledge is outside most live rock harvester's range.

I was thinking that as well, but I couldn't tell for sure on the spots.

I highly doubt it’s that spearer… and if you have some in your tank, they wouldn’t eat inverts.

Yeah I was told the one I caught when quarantining the rock was L. Glabriuscula so not being a mantis expert I figured the one that made it into the display was the same. I was also told that the majority of juvenile mantis spend all their time in rock due to cannibalism. As for his diet ? I haven't lost any small fish..... yet?
