Hi reefers,

Fairly novice when it comes to LPS. I bought this chalice about 2 months ago (I think it’s a chalice) and it looked great when I first put it in the tank but now is starting to recede with white skeleton beginning to show in the top and now with algae growing on the skeleton. I first had it under low flow and low PAR (<100) then moved it to low flow higher PAR (about 150 for 6 hours per day) and it continues to recede. Now I’ve just moved it to around 90 PAR for 6 hours a day. All low to low-moderate flow. I admit I’ve moved it around a lot as I start to panic every day I see more white. Ca is 480, mag 1300, sg 1.023, alk 8.4. Several of my other chalices as doing that as well. Any thoughts as to whether this is a light issue or a flow issue? I think my other parameters are okay. I have occasionally fed it reef roids. Thanks for any help! Eric

sg 1.023, I think my other parameters are okay.

Couple of questions. Why is you specific gravity only 1.023 and by stating you think your other parameters are okay, how do you even know what they are unless testing. I may be mistaken but my LPS like a little bit of dirty water. I'd run a soup to nuts testing regime first. Is your ALK stable at 8.4 or is it bouncing all over the place? What is NO3 and P04 at?

Good this is, it's still alive so there is a chance to save it. Being this is happening to all of your chalices, it's not a good thing. Also, your salinity at .023 is a bit on the low side for a reef tank. Typically .024 - .026 is where most reef tanks are kept. You'd be surprised at the difference.

How old is your tank?

Please test Nitrate and phosphate and report back..
