Changing Aquarium Background

Functionally and appearance-wise, is there a difference between applying vinyl/aquarium backgrounds and painting a poster board then mounting it against back glass? Painting the glass directly is not an option because I can't access it entirely.
I have a poster board up now, but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

Painting just makes it so that no light comes thru the back. Really it's just up to you on what you feel looks good.
