it has been known that the poseidon pumps although extremely quiet will heat your water at least 2-4 degrees, my question is can you safely run this pump as your return if you are only using fans over your return area or is a chiller a MUST HAVE with these pumps( by the way- i am putting it on a 75 gallon setup)

No need what so ever to have a chiller unless your tank is regularly hitting the high 80's. Unless you have no central air that should never be a problem.

but in the winter time, the heat is on and it gets hotter upstairs( where tank is) than downstairs, but i will be using 2 fans pointing directly over my return section

Evaporative cooling can be extremely efficient in reducing a systems temperature and keeping it stable. I run two fans on my system to keep the temp stable between 79.5 and 80.2 degrees. Just be mindful of the fact that if you are evaporating a large amount of water then you can run into issues of the moisture being absorbed by furniture and drywall. You also will need to make sure you have an ATO setup on there so you arent driving yourself crazy adding water and causing salinity swings.

Unless you're heating your house to above 80 you'll be fine. Also, I highly doubt a PS1 is going to add as much heat as people are claiming, and that's more than enough pump for a 75 gallon.

I would change out the return pump before adding a chiller if it really does heat up the water theat much. A different pump would be much cheaper not to mention the electrical cost of operating a chiller.
