Controlably raise Nitrates?

Very interesting, the photos say a lot. I may raise my nitrates a bit and see what happens. will be interesting.

Check this out....

The only thing that changed was the nitrate. It spiked during moving the tank to 1ppm. After 3 weeks it had fully colored up. You're on the right track with your thinking. The lights have less to do with it than most people want to believe. I'm not saying you can color acro with a standard light bulb. I'm saying if it is adequate lighting for sps then that's all you need.

It was not the only acro I have that showed tremendous improvement. Unfortunately there are no before pictures of the others because they were just brown turds lol

Here in SoCal the SPS are like crayon colors and Tank of the Month awards hang on every other mantle around here... you know what we do?

FEED your TANK!!

EMPLOY nutrient CONTROL including heavy skimming and ecoBAK.

REPEAT!!
+1
I agree a few of us on the East Coast figured out the same thing. Lots of food and clean water = happy SPS

Not trying to take over this thread but I must admit I'm following this with my ears and eyes wide open. The photos Pete Polyp posted are spot on to what I see a few corals in my tank looking like. The before ad aft are amazingly spot on! Also the comment Joe Warner made "Here in SoCal the SPS are like crayon colors". I'm big on feeding my tank. Large bio load also equals lots of fish poo. My system is top of the line, everything, but that crayon color is missing. I'm a bio pellet reactor person and my nitrates have been zero. After reading this thread, and the photo, I've decided to raise my nitrate level, easy with the reactor just reduce flow out of the reactor, and see what happens over the next month.
I've been adjusting my light levels, thinking that is what has been missing, for almost a year. Everything I read talks about the lighting and coral color. I have the vertex illumine LED's. It has all the Whites, Blues, Reds, Greens, U'v's you could ask for. So I have the light and my water is clean with all parameters textbook. It's been this way for awhile but still do not have that crayon color.
Guess I've been the true definition of an idiot for over a year, "Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result"

I created another thread on how to create the solution to dose. I will update this thread with some before and after once I begin the dosing. I'm really hoping this helps the overall coral health from my lps to sps.

I'm hoping to controll mine with my bio pellet reactor. If I turn the flow bact going to my skimmer I theoretically should be able to elevate my nitrates. So far I'm 4 days into it still with 0 nitrates but I do see a little more film on the glass and a little brown on the sand so that tells me something is going on.
