How will I know where to place my coral? I know certain types have different requirements but how will I know where the right spot for it in my tank is? Do I just watch it and if it doesn't open, try another spot? If so, what do you secure the frag with (to the live rock) in order to be able to move it around a few times easily?

With LPS it's pretty safe to start everything initially low in the tank. It's been my experience that the most common characteristic of improper placement is color loss. Give the coral a couple weeks to acclimate in one spot and move up slowly. Once you have established a good placement for that particular coral type then epoxy or glue it down.
Some LPS do not need to be blasted with light so don't assume the more light the better. Provide stable chemistry and mod flow.
