Ok a couple questions.

Do all Montiporas have the possibility of stinging other corals? When I get to the point of having a Monti. What is a good starter one?

Also I have seen zoas on rocks and some in the sand bed. Is this just personal preference?

I really like the look of brain corals, acans, favias, some chalices.

What are your favorite types of SPS and LPS? I am going to try and have a true mixed tank.

I am trying to get an idea of placement before I begin.

Ok. Yes all montiporas sting.
Good starter just about any montipora digita or montipora capracornis.
Zoas grow best on rocks, it could be that you are seeing zoa's on a rock that is on the sand bed.

True mixed reef tank is hard to do since the light/flow requirements for sps and LPS are different. But if you keep the sps up high and the lps down low it is not that hard to mix many of them.

The best thing to do, IMO, when planning a mixed reef is to anticipate the growth patterns of the corals. Also, take into consideration if the corals have sweeper tentacles. You should be able to envision the growth patterns of the corals and help you to strategically place the corals.
