Hey guys. Had this show up yesterday morning when he came out of bed. Thought he might have just got an abrasion from a rock...but today it looks worse and now on both sides. Have had him for 4 years no new additions. All others look fine. My qt is currently housing other wrasses...if i must qt him i will sacrifice my 30 for another qt..:( catching him will be tricky. Other mates are yt ,pair of cardinals, melanarus, pair of clowns, pair of emerald sea grass wrasse, a firefish, carpenter wrasse,5 yellow striped cardinals, rhomboid wrasse, and 2 very large brittle stars. First pic is yesterday and the rest are today...

I’m a newbie but the marks look like the marks my blenny leaves on the glass while he eats algae. Is something biting him?

This appears to be an injury or aggression damage from what I can tell.

I have seen Uronema present itself similarly in the early stages. With no additions in 4 years and no redness I think it's pretty unlikely.

Ive been staring at this tank all day today looking for someone bugging him...he chases the melanarus some. Im hoping hes just sleeping in tight quarters.
And ive had him four years no new additions since the emeralds and that was in oct last year.
Thanks for helping.

The wrasse could be nearing its life cycle.

But the marks look bacterial infectionish. Do you have a fishtrap? Do you have NFG powder?

I have both...making more ro now to set up the 30 gal. Could have it ready by tomorrow and will try to trap him.

My lower-rung wrasses get marks kind of like this,to a lesser degree, but similar- from bickering. My black leopard always has a chuck or two of scales missing.

If I’d had to guess, I’d say someone chased him into a tight spot and he scraped himself getting through. I’d keep an eye on it, keep your water quality on par, and feed vitamin-enriched foods for a while until it heals.

If he starts breathing heavily, gets white or red blotches, or the wounds get a “fuzzy” appearance you might need to pull him and treat with antibiotics.

Ok for now ill watch...but im gonna set up the extra qt just in case...
Strange cause hes the tank boss...lol...maybe the melanarus is getting brave when im not looking. Emeralds stay to thier xenia unless theres food. Clowns are mean but they hardly leave thier corner ...idk...

IME the melanurus is the more assertive of the two species, but obviously every specimen is different.

Good idea to have the QT ready to go, keep us posted!

Ya generally they are. But the corris has a couple inches on him and was in there first.
Waters in and warming up will be ready if needed.
Thanks everybody. Hes one of my favs.

Whew....that took awhile to catch him!

Hes in qt now...but for some reason my nfg is as hard as a rock!:eek: got some more on he way. But for the meantime i trated him with the trifecta...kanaplex,metroplex and furan 2 hopefully thatll do the trick as well.
Since posting it has doubled in size and now has some red spotting and white fuzzies in the area.
Hope i got him out in time...:(

It's good you got him into QT, I would just continue with the trifecta since it's started at this point... antibiotics can be slow-acting, and once you start a course it's generally better to finish the full 10 days before trying something different except for in extreme circumstances.

Do you happen to have any acriflavine? Ruby reef rally or API Fungus Cure contain it. A 90-minute bath might be helpful if the infection looks to be spreading quickly, could buy the antibiotics some time to get to work...

I do have the api fungus cure...if it looks any worse tomorrow ill give him the bath...dont want to stress him out by catching him again.
Thanks again.

If he starts breathing very heavily and/or stops eating, I would do the bath immediately... those are some of the "last stage" symptoms of bacterial infections IME. I've not had many recover once they get to that point. Good luck, hope he pulls through!
