Custom sump ideas

I got a quote for a 48x16x16 for $565 plus shipping. It would be, overflow type filter socks on both ends of the sump, skimmer/reactor area, return in the middle and then a fuge on the other side. Also a adjustable skimmer baffle so I don't need a stand. What do u guys think?

I have posted pics of this sump before. You asked for ideas, so here is a sump I made from a 40 gallon breeder from Petco. $40 plus I cut all the baffles from scrap ¼" glass I had laying around. Probably built the sump itself for less than $100, not including equipment of course.

Some pics during the build and some with it in operation. I have been happy with it.

Man that thing looks pretty sweet. I was thinking of doing that but I need more room. A 40B isn't big enough but I want something that has the same height as the 40. Just longer

How do u have it running from left to right? Is there a fuge or no?

It does run from left to right. No fuge at the moment, but will be adding a 37 gallon remote refugium soon. It will sit behind the tank (a 140). The right compartment is a frag tank, with an Evergrow LED light.

Everything that needs maintenance is at the front of the sump. Reactors are on quick disconnects, so they are out of the sump for service in seconds. The filter socks can also be changed easily and the skimmer cup and skimmate collector are quick to get to. That was my goal with the sump - easy maintenance.

How long did it take u to make? Did u silicone everything or use something else??

Well, I am a procrastinator. So, it wasn't like I started it and stayed on it until it was completed. While I did draw out my original concept, there was no measured plan that I followed. It kind of evolved over time. A lot of time just sitting there with me thinking how I wanted it.

I work with glass. I am an old timer and I like that when cleaned, glass will look brand new years down the road. Acrylic, not so much - unless you are very careful with it. Cutting ¼" glass to me is simpler than messing with a table saw and cutting acrylic. Measure, scribe and break with special glass run pliers (cheap) a quick run over the sharp edges with sandpaper and that's it. Kind of a lost art these days. For the larger parts, like if I am building a sump from scratch or a nano tank, I have my glass shop just cut those to size, if I don't have enough scrap laying around. Baffles, overflows, etc., I cut myself. I even made a skimmer once out of glass. Ha!

I use only Momentive RTV 100 series for building. You can get it through Grainger's or Amazon, among other places. Not likely to find it at your local hardware store. RTV 108 is clear and RTV 103 is black. I use black.

Wow, I wish you were closer, I'd pay you to make me one!

Ha! Well, thanks for your vote of confidence. You want something larger anyway. Maybe get a 75 (keep an eye out for those PetCo dollar a gallon sales) and build it from that yourself. Plan how you want it and you can always go to your local glass shop to have baffles cut. I use painter's tape to mask on each side of where the baffles will be (when possible) run the bead of sealant and then immediately remove the tape. Leaves a really clean edge and reduces your clean-up and trimming time. To me, planning and building is a large part of the fun I get out of the hobby.

Yeah I'll definitely look into that and when the time comes. I'll be looking back at this thread and getting all the specifics for sure. Really like your sump

Tried emailing both elite and synergy and no one got back to me :(

When did you email Elite? I know that when I was talking to them (( about a month and half ago )), the guy's ( that I was emailing with ) wife just had a baby. Might be busy with that.

I think I read where Synergy is building a new shop right now. I bet they are probably backed up.

Have you ever heard of AquaBox? One of the new build threads here featured a pretty sweet looking sump made of ABS. They don't have a lot on their web site, so you would probably have to contact them by email.

The sump I saw is in SPSPirate's build thread. This is the page where he posted pics of the sump: https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/member-tanks/155148-spspirates-150-gallon-build-24.html
