It's always something. Biology always lines up with free ammonia such that we could discern without testing. Something we can see and smell occurs with true free ammonia, no testing required.
Test kit misreads are more common than accurate reads regarding ammonia and cycling.
I would opt for option one prior, let it run doing nothing but topoff and light feed for a few days and watch the details, fish gill motion is your best ammonia indicator, never ever ever misreads
That and water clarity. Clouding is requisite, universally present in a true free ammonia problem cycle tank
There's a reason everyone's water is staying crystal clear yep
Two fish in sixty gallons w bottle bac and already living surfaces is guaranteed to skip cycle, your lfs is legit advising.
