Hey guys,
New to R2R forums. Have been away from the hobby for a few years but looking to get back in.
Some folks seem to have this really deep orange almost red colored clowns. I can't seem to find them anywhere. Is this a special morph? The color is gorgeous and very bright compared to the standard orange ocellaris or percs. Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to R2R!!! :)

There are Maroon clowns which are darker red. There is also a mocha variant, but they are more "mocha colored".

Was not referring to the maroons.

The Blood Orange hybrid might be it. However I don't recall them being ORA. Do you have pics of your clowns?

Ill try to find pictures or you tube videos online. I wonder if they are just really good ocellaris specimens.

Thanks

I do have a pic that is not edited, but was done with a cell phone, so the blue is a bit funny looking. The clown is more neon red with just the halides at 12k over it. I have blue led light bars also, and that just makes my phone go nuts lol. The blood orange clowns are a hybrid of and osc. and a maroon. Mine are not from ORA, I just used that site as the pics are not blown out with color or shop'd all crazy like.

Excuse Nanner the banana wrasse. He photo bombs everything.

So I’m being fooled by the photos.

Haha great pic!
Clown looks good.
Lots of stuff out there is so crazy enhanced, it isnt funny. There are some clowns though that look awesome under radions and such with the UV tuned up. It just hits just right to make them pop, and no editing is needed. But either way, if purchasing a clown online, try to get a pic under white light. Or post the pic here for the crew to look at. There are some very good signs that can be spotted to see if it was shop'd.

Have you seen AlRod's infrared picassos? They are perculas pumped up on astaxanthin.

I've got a couple of mochas. They are actually darker than they appear in this pic.

That’s the exact red I’m talking about!!! That’s not photoshopped nor light tricks. So these clowns are just fed diets high in Astaxanthin? I don’t know anything about this supplement. Is it safe?

Yes, it's totally safe. People have been taking it in pill form for years as a supplement. Reef Nutrition (AP Breed) makes a food with astaxanthin so that you can feed it to your fish and keep the bright orange (I wouldn't call it red) color.

I had a good conversation with the Reef Nutrition rep at one of the reef shows and he said that they add the maximum amount of astaxanthin to the food that can be utilized by the fish. Anything over that amount and it is excreted as waste.

Not very detailed but very interesting.

Hmmm... I read the "study" and it somewhat contradicts what the rep told me. I specifically asked him about higher levels (because I was thinking about pumping some babies) and he said that it was expelled as waste, not that it made the fish "redder".

Hey there! It was me that you spoke with at the trade show. I apologize for giving you incorrect information. It appears that I need to pay closer to attention to the researcher's notes. While they may expel some of the astaxanthin, it sounds like they continue to accumulate in the presence of a more concentrated form.

Best,
Chad

There are other clowns besides ocellaris that are more red. Check out Tomato Clownfish (Amphiprion frenatus) or Cinnamon (Amphiprion melanopus). Both can be a bit more aggressive.

Hi can someone give me some more tips for my clownfish I recently got a new clown (the smaller dark orange one) and they became friends I just wanted some more advice to make them more comfortable
