Diamond Goby

I personally wouldn't put them in anything smaller than a 90g tank that's been up for two or more years. They can get decently large, and they go through a lot of sand. They don't strictly need to filter sand to get food - they will eat pellets and mysis and such - but I've never had long-term success with them in a smaller tank.

I'm sure other people have had different experiences, but that's where I stand on them. I've heard some people having success with them in 40-55g tanks, but even putting aside the issue of sand surface area, a 20g might be too small for them to feel comfortable.

Can I put a diamond goby in a 20 gallon tank with the CaribSea Reef Grade Sand? I just realized how cute they are.
I think a Randall's shrimp goby or watchman goby would be better suited for a 20 gallon. They aren't sand sifter but are interesting, especially if you pair them with a pistol shrimp.

Agree with the watchman pistol shrimp combo for endless viewing pleasure - then again know that part of your sand scape will be the shrimps to do what it pleases

then look at a clown goby to occupy the rock scape cuteness

and I will split the difference on the diamond - but it needs a lot more sand surface and maturity of that sand before they will thrive than your 20...

Yes as long as water quality and diet are managed. Had a full grown in a 20g drop off tank for over a year until I went to a larger drop off tank

I got the little guy quickly after I posted this when I realized they could and if in the future I need to upgrade that’s what I’ll do but for now he’s tiny like a little bigger than an inch.

Okay great because I got the little guy and he’s a little over an inch and I have a very dirty sand bed lol full of food for him. If in the future I need to upgrade that’s what I’ll do.

It will not grow that fast

I think more than just pure size, it is the amount of stuff in the sand it will sift - might not be a bad idea to start to supplement with a couple of the available pods out there for the tank

There’s already pods in my tank too.☺️

I have a 13.5 gallon fish tank with the diamond goby in it. It is a fun fish to have with its "I dnt giv a f" attitude. it sifts alllll day.
I do recommend this fish for the viewing pleasure, but there is some things to keep in mind.

These get big. especially for my tank its too big. Hence the reason why im trying to take mine out to replace with a smaller sand sifter, but I have no clue how to catch this lil bugger...
Make sure you dont have any corals in the sandbed, they will not be happy.
I dont have any trouble on them running low on food in the sandbed since mine pretty much eats pellets, mysis, brineshrimp REALLLLLY well. Problem I have with it is the two things... Bugs my corals in the sandbed and it gets too big. Honestly I dont think they would stress in a tank small as 20 gallons as some people here might say. These guys dont really "stress". Atleast mine didnt... it just doesnt give a FFFFFFFFFFFFF.
If your okay with the downsides than your good to go. Try it out and if it doesn't seem to work out, not too late for you to take out later down the road.

EDIT:
Oh yeah. Forgot to mention these are probably one of the MOST hardiest of fish out there. I had a Velvet outbreak in my tank and 3 of my other fish died and it was the lone survivor. It literally didnt care if its fishmates died out one by one. It just kept minding its own business sifting sand. Crazy lil dude if you ask me..
