I think that size definitely matters. I got a 2" hunk of Gold Millepora from Copps once and in about a year I had a 7 inch real colony. These were super healthy too, but larger stuff grows faster. If you get a booger, then it might be 2 years before your frag is even 2 inches.
If I personally frag pieces of 1 inch, or larger, then they will encrust a good amount in less than 2 weeks. Some boogers take months to encrust the same. The larger a frag is, the more ability it has to create energy for growth and to be healthy.
All of this being said, I think that size is about the third thing that I look for in a frag and not the most important.
Yea but if I get a small 1/2" frag that's healthy and already proving growth there isnt much difference. Unless your dealing with notorious slow growing species. Encrusting is something that's done differently by each type of acropora til so that's not really too important unless we start naming specific acropora right ?
To the op, I would just by mari or wild from vendors. But, vendors like aqua sd are now just growing stock (i am assuming) and letting frags heal to sell and probably cutting up any new stuff and holding it because of the issues importing right now. Might be hard to find colonies but at least asd and a few other vendors are cutting nice portions and letting them heal well.
