DORSO OVERFLOW

I'm really glad I read this. I just got some very good info.
Same here

I had 2 tanks that started out as durso drains, one mine and the other a friend's, and both tanks are now herbie style. I tried every way I could think of to get it to stop making the noise you must be hearing and I could not. I knew better than to gate it off and only have a single drain to my sump. I used the original drain as my herbie, main drain with the gate, and the old return hole as my emergency drain. I did have to run the return up the back and into the tank. I painted the pipes black, except for the parts that are in the water. The parts in the water are now purple with coraline and blend in well. I worried about the look of it and what other people would think but whenever I have friends over nobody notices the purple and black pipes. They say wow look there's nemo and his friend's. Look at that coral, that's cool! That's a nice stand, did you build that yourself?
Honestly, I really don't notice the pipes anymore either, except for now since we are on the subject, lol. I know you said you didn't really want to but it will be silent, and safe, if you do the herbie style drain.

+1 on this.
If you still want the derso, I recommend removing the silly little rigid tube at the top and drill the hole slightly larger. If it still gurgles as you run the pump, drill again slightly larger again. Do this until it's quiet. Just have to find the sweet spot.

Would you guys mind showing some pics of your quiet durso and Herbie's? I'm just getting into my plumbing.

If you’re able to, go with herbie. But a durso is not as bad as people are making it honestly. U can get it super quiet, I speak from experience.

Not the best pics. Looks like I have some salt creep on my bulkheads. The emergency is close to the top of the weir to keep the noise down. I ran the return back into the corner because I also plumbed for the durso when originally set up the tank so that filled the hole that ran back into the tank. I also made this cover out of foam sheet I got from Walmart. That helps with noise and keeps algae from growing in the corner.

If you do use the screen, make sure you can take it off to clean it as it will become clogged up pretty quickly.

You shouldn't have salt creep around the bulkheads, that means there's a leak. Also, great idea on the foam to cover the overflow box!

Agreed the foam is a great idea!

Yup, very true. Going to see if they need a little snugging. No water in the stand so it may have been there a while.

I have a drilled tank. Glass cages. 1.5" and 1.25" they use sch80 bulkheads. Can I do Herbie?

I've been busy today so sorry this took a while. First pic is my sump. The line on the left is a twisted mess if pipe as that was my original return line. I had to get it to drop into the right spot. The one on right is the original durso turned herbie using a spare redsea gate i had on hand. Since redsea uses metric parts I had to finagle that too using a 1 1/4 inch rubber coupler. Lucky it worked.
Second pic is it from the top. Pipe on left is emergency overflow. One on right is the herbie with a silencer on it. Not necessary but it does pull from the bottom now so there is less nasty stuff at the bottom of the overflow box. It was easy to make the transition and I'm glad I did.

Personally, I never liked any over the top type of overflows. It seems they always slowly get air up in the top of them and flow slows. Eventually, they will flow less than the return pumps, and overflow the tank. I even got a big U pipe with a port for an aqualifter, to try and continually suck the air out of it...which just gave me another rproblem… because aqualifters are complete garbage and have to be cleaned all the time.

I won't have another tank without three pipes out of the overflow...one for main siphon, one for secondary, and one for emergency. I enjoy complete silence, and 850gph flow rates.
