If you are planning on using a dosing pump get your calcium, akalinty and magnesium to correct levels before dosing with the pump. Don't try catchup with the pump or you will have issues. Once you get levels where you want them go 3 days witout adding anything and then test. Determine what your loss was with each element and divide by 3. This will tell you your daily intake. Once you do this then go to one of the reef calculaters like the brs one and it will tell you how much to dose to maintain these levels. Then you can set doser accordingly. I made this mistake and had my parameters all messed up. Live and learn. lol
I'm so confused. I'm just getting into SPS and will probably have to dose. I keep hearing "Get your levels up before you start dosing". Then when I ask, "How do you get your levels up", I'm told, "Dose". See my confussdedness. Can you help with some clarity on this subject? Thanks.

I think it says get your levels correct. Meaning doing the basic steps of water changes and staying on a routine husbandry including manual dosing. Once you have better understanding of your parameters and you know how to keep it stable (Manually) then you can move up to a doser. My .02

And in there lies my question. To get your levels correct by manually dosing what? If it's not recommended to dose Kalk to raise your levels to where they are supposed to be. And now Mike is saying, before you start dosing with a pump, get your levels correct. What do you do to get your levels correct for your tank? Water changes? But I'm guessing that's not enough. What do you manually dose to get your levels where they are supposed to be?
