Dry live rock

If it's dry, then it's not really live rock. What I mean is that in order for rock to be "live," it has to have the nitrifying bacteria on it (which only happens when it's wet). Many of us buy dry rock that we put in a tank and seed with bacteria so that it becomes live. I like this method because a lot of live rock that you buy can come with pests (aiptasia, majanos, etc.), and this is avoided by buying rock that us dry with no life on it. Others prefer buying live rock (wet rock) because sometimes it comes with cool hitchhikers. HTH ;)

you can buy the bacteria solutions that start the cycle, or just use any ammonia source such as a shrimp and as it decays the bacteria will begin to build up on the dry rock making it live rock. Some people seed coralline algae from a piece of live rock.
