Durso adjustment

If you're going to go through the trouble of replumbing the return, you could use 1/2" pipe instead of 1". That will increase the head considerably and probably get you where you want to be. I wouldn't worry about back pressure on the pump. They are designed to operate throughout the whole published curve. I would still plumb it with a spill back as morpheas suggested. If nothing else, you could use it for a reactor or for water changes.

Agreed, they are designed for it. I'm just over protective of the machines that's all ;) plus the less back pressure the less possibility for a break down is all...

Excuse the crudity of it but that's pretty much what I have set up...

Going to pass this on, but also going to keep it for future reference. Thanks!

I just received a 90 gallon bowed front tank.
I was going to go with the "Bernie overflow method"
Gmacreef.com will help explain this method.

Based on how inexpensive those pumps are. I would suggest purchasing a pump that is sized correctly. A 90 gallon tank wouldn't need more than a 4000lph pump or go 6000lph max and run it at the lowest setting. Sell the 12000 or keep it for the 240gal upgrade down the road.

The ONLY way I was able to quiet my durso was to have the drain line go into a filter sock with the drain line being the PERFECT height into the sock where it lets the water out without splashing like crazy and at the same time allowing the air to escape to avoid gurgling, changes in partial to full siphon, and other noise. I used soft silicone tubing for my drain so I could get a straight as a run as possible to my sump.

It took a long time to fine tune.

I also drilled one extra hole at a time in the top cap of the drain line to slow the siphon down. The bigger the hole or more holes the less water goes down the drain; the smaller the hole or less holes the greater the siphon and more water goes down the drain.

I ended up with four holes in the cap. I used RO tubing in the cap where I drilled the holes to quiet the gurgle noise. Basically creating a muffler out of RO tubing.

That's what I ended up doing too as my tank is in my office and just too much noise. Herbie is almost silent.
I did the same on my tank but actually drilled the back for two 1/2" bulkheads instead of over the rim.

The good thing by doing this is he can move the return to the opposite corner of the tank.
