My tank has been doing horrible lately for no apparent reason. Going on about a month. All tests were coming back normal. Alkalinity stable, on point. No changes to anything. Even replaced my RO membranes/ carbon filters, ran GAC, fearing some kind of contamination. 4 + year old SPS colonies would first show lack of PE, then turn brown, then STN from the base up. First I thought pests, or a few isolated STNS. Test dipped, etc. nothing. I was scratching my head. 80% of colonies were showing signs of STN. I was thinking about tearing everything down and starting over.

Went to clean my pumps, and look what I found. Mind you, this happened over approximately one month, since pumps are cleaned monthly. So, very rapidly. I clean with a dilute solution of warm water and tunze or BRS citric acid, or vinegar. This is a 3 month old pump, purchased around Christmas from BRS.

I email ectotech customer support. Attached copies of the photos and my proof of purchase from BRS. I am told that it is basically my fault, for using citric acid. and that " the pumps are not designed to be used with a cleaning agent of that nature," and that I should have been using vinegar solution instead. What a laughable and misinformed excuse. Acetic acid and citric acid are very comparable weak acids, being used dilutely. Clearly, there is a quality issue. I understand that some items may fall through the cracks and that defective products are inevitable on occasion. But don't make excuses, and insult my intelligence. Own up to it and act rapidly to directly correct the issue. This is the most expensive pump of its class on the market. Didn't have this issue with $40 Jebaos. I am very disappointed and have lost respect. Mind you, this post is coming from somewhen who was gloating a few months ago about the virtues of Eco tech products.

That said, they offered to have me pay to send the pump back, at which point they will inspect it and possibly send me a new one. Meanwhile, tank is with reduced flow. I will probably sell off the new one and subsequently switch all to Tunze, for one because I can't risk this happening again, and two, because I did not like the way this was handled.

Beware.

At any rate, doing water changes Daily. Replacing GAC daily. I can tell that the GAC is pulling things out of the water, since it turns bright orange (rust colored) after use in the sump. ( I don't use GFO.) The contamination issue has set off a chain reaction, in which the dying off corals have elevated my nutrients and promoted cyano. However, I am confident that things will improve soon since discovering the cause. Looking into a chelating agent; concerned about Sn, W, or Ba contamination.

Curious what model? I thought all the newer wetsides had a ceramic sleeve over the center spindle. You might want to run a poly filter for a while.

Ecotech website says:

it may be necessary to soak these

parts in a mild acid solution such as vinegar.

Do not use strong acids, because these may

damage the components.

Just tell everyone what you want us to use, Ecotech.

I agree with this statement. Your sleeve is missing, which protects the spindle. I have vortech pumps and have never seen rust on them.

To clarify, I don't want to promote any kind of debate about any kind of sleeve. The pump was used out of the box, how I received it from BRS. Thats all I know. I do not have an understanding of the design/ components of these pumps. Paying almost $300 for a pump and purchasing from a reputable vendor, I feel I was reasonable in trusting that the proper components were assembled satisfactorily and would not be prone to issue. The purpose of this thread is to advise other users to be on the lookout for this problem. Also, to discuss suggestions for dealing with a possible heavy metal contamination issue in the aquarium.

Ok, but you spent 2/3 of your post complaining about the pump. Was just trying to help you out by asking if the wet side had the ceramic spindle sleeve, because if it didn’t then you could rightly expect ETM to send you a new one regardless of what you used to clean it.

As to heavy metals, definatesly run poly filter. They are very good at adsorbing heavy metals.

Well this is really weird. Even the base of the spindle on yours is round, it should be square. Do you have pictures of the dry side or do you still have the box? What is the manufacturing date?

I wonder what is the reason they don't use ceramic shafts like Jebao. If they're going to use stainless, the stainless parts should be replaceable and available for purchase. I've seen enough of these threads with rusty pumps that aren't even that old and ETM not taking care of it, blaming the user... I don't think I would buy anything from ETM. Also, I have old MJ pumps with no apparent rust on their shaft/impeller assemblies. I suspect ETM is using a low grade of stainless, then when it rusts they want you to buy a whole new wet side. Crazy.

From what I've seen (two different pumps manufactured over 2 years apart) they changed from square to round lately. Both of mine has the ceramic spindle though.

I had previously problems with the square ceramic base actually twisted and bent the plastic causing problems.

Hmm I've had parts rust in the tank before and it didn't cause coral deaths... also coral deaths shouldn't increase nutrients that much... me thinks something else might be at play here?

I have had the exact same issues as you. CoralsDying for no reason. The tank was thriving. SPS, LPS and softies. I’ve done so many water changes, tested non stop, finally sent water samples to ATI. All was fine. Took my pump apart and it’s basically the same as yours. These pumps are the MP40s, less than a year old. Have yet to contact Ecotech.
