If I put an encrusting monti on the edge of a cliff, will it grow out into the open water and create an overhang/ledge or will it not grow in that direction and only grow on the rock? Any pics would be cool to see to for inspo!

either/or/both it varies depending on flow and lighting so you won't know till it does. i've had encrusting that grew off an edge and downward and some that grew outward like a cap does, but it's no guarantee either way.

No. IME, plating montis will (capricornis), but encrusting montis will just grow on the rock/substrate they’re on. They may grow out a centimeter or so, but not inches or feet like a capricornis.

If the cliff has a face it will follow the face. Sunset monti followed the face down until he hit the next rock.

hard to snap a good pic because of the angle it’s at but as you can see this encrusting has formed a huge blob that’s out around 1.5” from the edge of the rock face. So I’ll defer back to my above post…. It can, but no guarantees it will.

Mine encrusted over the rocks until it was stable enough, now it’s shelving out into the water. It started the size of a nickel now it’s about as big as baseball size. Sorry for the blue pic, my MH light just turned off a minute ago
