Hello everyone, I am wondering what an exotic, but doable fish for an intermediate reefer with a Red Sea Reefer 200xl. I currently have Montiporas, a Birds nest, some Zoanthids, a Cyphastrea, and a chalice, the tank inhabitants are a Royal Gramma, two Frostbite Clowns, and a Firefish goby, the only restraint is that it has to be under $300 usd. Thank you!

Living in Michigan, I would consider all reef fish to be exotic. If you are looking for less common fish try the miscellaneous category on popular fish retailer's websites. Once in a while you find some pretty interesting fish. Those more unusual fish usually come with much less husbandry information do to their scarcity in the hobby.

I have more experience in the exotic fish in the FOWLR realm, but something that is very cool and I imagine would mix into a reef with other fish is a Mimic Filefish, aka Saddleback Filefish. These are some of the coolest filefish I have ever seen and are a very unique and exotic addition. I have seen them go for around 400 at my lfs which is HOF which prices things on the significantly higher side. So I imagine you could find it for around 250. The only thing is these guys are very hard to come across, but that's what makes exotic fish exotic :face-with-tears-of-joy:

These guys mimic the look of a Valentini/Saddleback puffer. Here is a comparison below.
