Hi

I'm moving mi 40BD and in my house heat is a problem. I'm currently running an aquaticlife 3700L. The thing is i want to help my chiller as much as possible, currently thinking of changing the pump to an external pump which one would you guys recommend. I have seen the:

Iwaki MD-20RLT

Little giant 2MDQX

Blue Line 30HD or 30HD-X

any other suggestion is welcome

Thanks

You can run almost any pump externally. What pump are you using now. I can say the Iwaki and blueline/panworld pumps are too loud for my taste. I could hear mine in my bedroom at night when it was in the living room on the other side of the house. I am weird about noises though. It may not bother some. I've heard the Sicce syncra silents are pretty quiet. No first hand knowledge though. That will probably be my next return pump though.

I would probably get something like this, or maybe the next size up depending on how much flow you want. The end unclips and you can run basic .5" PVC fittings. Suppose to be super silent. Like I said, I've never had one, but I hear allot of good things. I'm probably going to be getting the 5.0 pretty soon for my 120

thanks i think ill go with the 3.0 since is going to be running the chiller, external mini refugium, calcium reactor and gfo reactor

Why not a DC pump! And run it internally.

Quiet, little heat, low energy consumption.....can't beat it.

I'd look at one of the newer Jebao DCT pumps

I am running the Sicce Syncra Silent 1.5 Pump (357 gph) on my 40 gal breeder, but I am only using it as a return from my sump.

@underwood , and how does it sound.. are they silent? The only submersible pumps I've ever used were mags, and they are too loud for my taste.

I can't hear it unless I have my head under my stand. My protein skimmer pump and MP40s make it seem virtually silent. It is quiet enough that I have to look up at the tank to ensure water isn't flowing out of the return to confirm I actually flipped the right switch to turn it off when doing maintenance on the tank.

That is the general consensus I get from most people running the smaller ones. The HF models still make noise, but is far less than the big mag pumps. Definitely less that a Iwaki/Panworld.

@banshee - Is there a reason you don't want to feed your chiller and refugium by tee'ing off from your drain line?

(I get not wanting to do that for the calcium and gfo reactors as it would likely introduce enough "crud" into the media that it would require more maintenance work on your end.)

I originally had grand ideas of feeding all my equipment from manifolds on either the drain or return line, and I actually started plumbing toward that path, but I quickly realized that all the tees / ball valves / misc plumbing required weren't going to fit under my stand when it was all said and done.

I don't know how much room you have underneath your stand (mine's footprint is basically the size of the tank with a 20 high sump inside), but something to keep in mind. I just ended up buying a separate tiny pump to feed my carbon reactor and that has ended up working well for me as it has made it super easy to take it offline whenever needed.
