As you all know I am fighting a hair algae problem. I am now thinking that my food selection is due to the hair algae fueling problem. I feed my fish hikari cichlid food along with my diy food. Could the cichlid pellets be what is causing the plague on me. If you think it is tell me.

Why are you feeding food designed for fresh water species to marine fish? I do not know the amounts of phosphate are in dry food.

Every time you feed you're fueling the hair algae fire...no matter what it is...but I'm sure some foods are worse than others.

I'm just not sure about that one in particular.

I guess I'm fired on that one. Lol. New question. Can palys sting branching montipora . I blew some hair algae off of it and it has a good size white where the palys grew up to it.

I'm not so sure about the cichlid food either. Your DIY food probably has the least amount of phosphates. Id try taking out the cichlid food for a couple days and see what happens.

My monti is dead . I think. It's all white. I ordered dry rock from brs today for my dads tank he got off Dave. We chose the eco reef saver rock 35 lbs.

What's your po4 at? And what test kit? Also if your rocks contain po4 it will cause algae even if your test kits read 0ppb. Also test kits don't read organic phosphates. I suggest an algae scrubber added to your system if possible. I have high po4 I believe from rocks and no nuisance algae in my tank. Or at least add a refugium with chaeto light it 18/6 turn display hours down to 6-7 hours total might even go for a 3 day darkness. Or you can add some bacteria in bottle like dr tims waste away I believe its called.

I do have a refugium that's packed full of chaeto right now. This algae is the slimy brown kind that likes to attach itself to my corals. I will test the water parameter later today.

Again with the algae scrubbers.

That's likely diatoms. Did you use playsand?

The dry rock that I've seen is often FULL of phosphates...unfortunately.

What's wrong with algae scrubbers? And what you mean again? Sorry just trying to help out guess ill just go back to my forums :/ also that is dinos not diatoms and a whole different treatment GL.

Don't let Mel run ya off! She's prejudiced against algae scrubbers.

I swear people on internet forums can't take the slightest ribbing these days. I have to tiptoe around everyone because heaven forbid I don't put a smiley after what I say without offending SOMEone.

We've been discussing algae scrubbers (and how much I think they're a total fad) on Reef Central. That's why I'm saying "again". It's not directed at you specifically and wasn't meant to run you off. But if you're going to be around ETRC you ought to be able to take a bit of ribbing and give it right back. We make fun of each other constantly and it's not a big deal.

No playsand. I used aragonite. No brown hair algae on sand just the rocks and kreeping up on my corals.

Oh ok so I should take the EvilMel pics off my dartboard then? Sorry I don't know you all personally so its hard to tell sometimes. Trust me I can take and give. I'm big on the giving part lol. Anyway ill come over to RC to harass u on the fad subject.

Dapple sounds like you have dinoflagalates not algae. Look it up because this can spread and cover and kill corals fast.
