I have a 36x36x24 cube aquarium. I’m “window shopping” for fish. My question is, when looking at requirements do I look at the tank volume which is 135g or do I look at the size? For example my sides and front are only 36”. I think the largest tank with a 36” front is like a 65g. Do I need to only get fish that are for a 65g or less?

I wouldn't venture into some of the tangs. The smaller like bristletooth or tomini would be fine. Usually the tank recommendations are for swimming distances.

Tbh having smaller schooling fish would look better anyway. I have a tang but they're overrated.
