Ok, I need some suggestions on catching 2 very quick, very smart, and very fearful fish out of my tank. Trying to get them into QT to treat for ich. I successfully caught our trigger with a fish trap box after about 20 mins, but no surprise, he's a food *****. The hippo tang and flame angel want no part of that box no matter what's in it. With them being so flat they can hide anywhere and DO for hours if I try to get in there with a net. Is there a better way aside from dismantling the entire rock scape? They NEED to come out. Suggestions please!!
And thank you!

When trying to catch a fish I usually drop the trap in the tank prior and stop feeding. This gives them a chance to get used to the trap and they get hungry. After a day or 2 I add some food to the trap and go fishing.

I've seen many report luck with using a large ziplock bag - as finn said, leave it in there so they get used to it and then add some food. when you list the bag, the fish's natural inclination is to swim down and away so they stay trapped - good luck! many of us have had the not so great experience of tearing apart all of the rock work to catch a nasty fish or two :(

It took less than 24 hours to catch my smartest fish. I threw the trap in the previous evening and fed inside the trap, the next afternoon did the same thing and he was comfortable enough to go inside.

If I need to catch an angel or tang (or other omnivore/herbivore) I use a sheet of nori attached to a piece of rubble rock tossed into the back of the trap.
Stays in place far longer than pellets or frozen food and the fish have to go to the back to get it.

We have tried all of these. The trap was in the tank for 3 days, they got used to it. They would wait right outside the box for some of the frozen food to float out to them. I put seaweed, which they normally love, inside the box on a clip. They wanted nothing to do with that weed. I'm thinking I'm down to excavating.... [emoji31]

I have left my trap in for weeks before fish would readily go in to forage.
They did just what yours are doing before that but eventually accepted the trap as just another piece of the tank like the overflow.

If the tang and angel are eating as usual and show no symptoms other than a few white spots I would consider leaving them there and feeding food soaked in garlic.
In the long run they will be better off if they can not be caught with limited stress to them.

If garlic is another remedy that's supposed to help rid the ich, won't that just remove from the fish? They'll still be alive in the tank waiting to strike again unless I take them (the fish)all out until the parasite dies off, won't they?

The best way to go ichless in your DT is to QT all fish and treat for ich. Leave the tank fallow for 5 weeks or more. Good luck.

You can get the fish out by blowing water or bubbles into its rock it should come out then

That's a cool idea, I'll have to try that.

I agree, (even though this is our first encounter) that's why I'm trying to get them all out [emoji4]

Garlic doesn't cure ich. It will still be in the tank as a low level infection, just waiting to strike again. Your fish will still be infected, most likely in the gills where it can't be seen. The only way to be ich free is to remove the fish to qt, leave the tank fallow for 8 weeks (last length of time I heard), and then qt everything new before you put it in the tank.

And, cleaner shrimp and cleaner gobies also don't help with ich. The parasite is burrowed in below the skin, there is no way either shrimp or goby can reach the parasite to remove it.

Any way an easy way to treat ich is to lower the water tempuarture because the parasite can't breed in cold water just be careful though. But u still need to get the medication

FINALLY got all the fish out and into QT. Had to take out most of the rocks and it took 2 of us to herd into the net. They got first dose, and will have to get cozy in there with each other for the next few weeks while the DT pests die off.
WOOHOO another challenge successful.
