After introducing velvet into my system through some frags traded locally I have decided to set up a frag/invert QT system that will be separate from my display.

My display is a Reefer XL 425 (90 gallon). I have a 40 breeder that is my current fish QT and a 20 long that was my previous fish QT. My thought is to use the 20 as a frag/invert QT but I’m not sure the best way to set it up. I have a Hydra 26 for a light which is the same as my display.

Is the 20 long a good idea? Should I drill and add a sump or setup as an AIO? Would a different tank be better? I’m just looking for some feedback and advice before jumping into this.

Ok. So it sounds like I’m on the right track. Any thoughts on HOB vs sump?

For a QT, IMO HOB is more than enough. Most coral I have QTd was done in Rubbermaid bins with no filtration (just a heater and powerhead) and it worked fine.

That light will need to be well above the tank and ran fairly low IMO as well.

I do use a RSR nano now as invert and coral QT with a prime HD over it. No filtration in the sump. Just houses ATO and a heater.

a hang on back is almost overkill unless you have one laying around.

I mean, it's not like corals make a mess. I have a sponge filter in my coral QT.

once a week I take 5 gallons from my DT and use it to do a waterchange on the coral QT.

I do have a HOB for the 20. It sounds like a sump is not necessary. I’m planning to use sand and live rock for the inverts.

you bet. put the sand in a bowl or Tupperware. that way if you need to qt some fish you can pull the sand out and use copper.

good luck!
