So I’ve seen Gem Tangs the with white tails, yellow tails and ones with mostly like the body color. Each have slightly different spot patterns. Can someone explain the differences and possibly areas collected. Thanks

I'd imagine the spot pattern is like the leopard - no two are exactly the same. Tail color is probably an individual thing too; or perhaps it gets more yellow as the fish ages - that's what's happened with mine. Body spots also become less pronounced as it ages.

That’s a shame if age does play a roll like that. That’s the reason I never owned a Chevron Tang.

All the Mauritius ones I’ve seen have yellower tails where the Madagascar ones seem to have whiter tails. There have been a few brown/black tail variants that have come out of Madagascar as well. They seem to be a rarity though.

Also to me they look great as adults. I had mine 3.5yrs and recently lost him to a bacterial infection. I was so sad. Not money wise, but because I had him from my breakdown and was supposed to come with me to my new bigger(960g vs 860g) tank build at my soon to be new house.

I’m not sure about different color variants but mine has what I would describe as a gold tail. There is a big difference in tail color between it and my purple tang. What was a real surprise is that it can “turn on” its spots so to speak kind of like when a flasher wrasse flashes. Typically the spots are very visible but when he flashes you can see them from the other room!

I wonder what the collected split is between the two Ms? Clearly more are being collected to drive the prices down so much.
