Hi All!

I'm new to this forum and wanted to introduce myself and get some opinions on my upcoming tank. I had two marine tanks about 5 years ago in my apartment. One was an Aquapod 24, and the second was a 30 long with overflow weir to a 20 gal sump (all custom). Both tanks had fish and LPS and were lost to a three day winter power outage which dropped the temp of the tanks to 50 degrees.

Now in a new house, I want to get back into the hobby. Eventually I will get a 90-120 gal, but for now I'm going to stick with the trusty old Aquapod since I already have it and money is tight.

For the Aquapod, I just bought two new bulbs, two new vent fans (quieter and higher CFM), a MJ900, MJ1200 and heater. I have to do a lot of scraping but should be like new soon enough.

I have roughly 60-70lbs of dried live rock in a plastic tote in my basement (not gonna squeeze it all in the 24 gal though). Obviously, to save money I want to bring this rock back to life. The plan is to set up a tub in the basement, and cycle the rock in there to keep the smell away from the living space, then transfer it to its final tank in the living room upstairs once cured.

MY QUESTION IS:
-Does anyone have any tips/pointers on doing this? I bought it originally live and didn't start from dry. I will scrub and wash as best as possible in the sink then drop it into the salt water tub to get things going. I've read many forums on this and some people say to just let it do its thing, others say to add some frozen shrimp to kickstart the cycle, while others say to add store bought liquids. Just curious about what you all think is best.

Any and all information is helpful. Keep in mind I have been away from the hobby for years and am not up to date on the latest techniques and equipment.

Thanks for reading this lengthy post and I look forward to hearing from you and reading all your threads!!!!
Tim

If its been dry this long, its a better idea to throw a grocery store bought shrimp into the vat. That'll get ya going. It'll cure going that route.

First off WELCOME to R2R, you'll find that there has been many many changes in the past five years in equipment and to a degree husbandry practices. To re-cycling your old LR you will need some sort of organic material added as am sure after five years not much if any remaining. Heated circulating SW will work fine for this process and can go about it several ways on what to introduce to start up the Nitrogen cycle. Raw Shrimp to straight ammonia will get it going, adding some kind of 'Bacteria in a Bottle' will help speed up the process quite a bit and give that instant 'low-tide' smell your looking forward to...lol

Cheers, Todd

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I will keep this thread going with photos of the process. Very excited. Parts should be arriving early next week for the Aquapod upgrades

I am going to start the cycling process tomorrow. Does anybody know at what point I should start monitoring the Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate levels? Should I just let it do its thing for a few weeks before I start concerning myself with testing?

I usually wait 3 days to start checking and test every other day going forward.

Welcome to r2r and welcome back to this awesome hobby.

I got set back a few days on this project. Life has a way of messing with my "fun" time haha. I was thinking of making a thread with photos of the cycling process from dried old rock to awesomeness. This way anyone new will learn in one simple thread what to do (and possibly what NOT to do). Where should I post this? In the beginner section? Anyone have any requests or pointers on what to include in this thread?

I think that's a great idea. I'm sorry I don't know the answer to the question about where to post it. I would just chronicle the steps in a video or write it up with pictures.
