Getting back into hobby

Welcome back! Im in the same boat with you, an old salt back after 12 years. Get ready because technology has changed the lighting game. Like you i knew the world of MH and T5HO, got great shimmer from them. I just put a Kessil a80 tuna blue on a nano tank and the shimmer is the same as the old MH but the A80 is only 15 watts. Crazy right!? Anywho, I look forward to seeing your future tank!

Welcome to Reef2Reef!!!

I use kessils and they have fantastic shimmer. I add some diffused light using t5 in one tank and a reefbrite strip in another to help with shadowing.

Wassup fellow reefers! It has been 13 years since I last had my tank up and running. I need guidance. I used to have a metal halide and actinic light bulbs in a coralife fixture. I’m searching for something in LED powerful enough to create a great shimmer.

Welcome to R2R!

LED lights have come a long way and are very good. Many of the lights are tending toward a larger dispersion area and tend to be flatter, more like VHO/T5 lighting. Most of the puck type lights produce some shimmer but it is usually more what we call disco-ball effect; lots of little shimmer lines of different colors. Some of them are better than others. The one LED light known for being close to MH in shimmer is Kessil. I wouldn't really base my choice on shimmer today though. As nice as it is, coverage and spectrum are much more important. LEDs tend to be even more a point source, or multiple point sources, than even an MH with a decent reflector.
