Just set my first tank up, Just got live rock and water. I have a marineland canister filter i got used with my tank. Went to start it up and began squealing and making weird noises. Sounds broke to me. So now on the hunt for something different. Any suggestions?

Sump has definitely crossed my mind just new to this and still researching how those work. 29Gal. Fowlr now with intent to add reef

I would definitely recommend a sump. If you want a simple sump check out Next Reef sumps (I'm going with this for my next build) and if you want a sump with a refugium check out Trigger Systems Sumps.

Ill check those out. Trying to be cheap as possible without loseing reliability.

I did plan to upgrade in the future just not this soon

Aquaclear 110 and you can mod it or get an intank insert. You might want an hob skimmer. Check craigslist. You can usually find both for cheap.

Forgot to mention i have a canopy. I haven't looked to closely but im sure there's not much room to hang anything on the back. Sure some of you would know (not home to look)

I had a canopy on my 37 the ac110 fit fine, it's low profile. I had to cut a small notch in he canopy for the collection cup on my aquamaxx hob-1.

You won't regret getting a sump. It can be as cheap (a simple 10 gallon aquarium) or as expensive (a custom acrylic) as you want to make it. Even if it is just to house your skimmer and other equipment....especially in a smaller tank such as a 29 gallon where you will want to maximize the room in your display tank. It will give you extra water volume, allow for easy water changes, hide your equipment, and allow you to easily add things such as carbon, medications, etc. You will need an overflow (assuming it isn't drilled) that hangs on the back as well as a pump which will add extra costs.

I also have a 29g set-up. I removed the canopy since I want a T5HO lights and that gives me room to add a mini HOB protein skimmer. Used to have a Aquaclear 70 but too much flow and I did not like it.
