Growing algae without a sump

What do you guys without a sump use to grow algae? I was going to get a hang on filter for it but wanted to see if anyone has any better ideas.

i have a .5 gallon HOB quarantine tank as my fuge, it works wonders!! (for a 30g tank)i’ve seen others make diy chaeto reactors/above the tank fuge that works with gravity as well.

I have a hob, got a $15 led light from Amazon and my cheato went from the size of a softball to 4/5 times the size in a month. I plan on using the hob until I get a reefer 250 or 350 with a sump
